Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu's lawyer Kipchumba Karori on Sunday morning explained the whereabouts of the governor who had allegedly gone into hiding shortly after the announcement of his arrest warrant. Governor Waititu who had been 'missing' since Friday surrendered himself to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) offices in Nairobi.
According to the lawyer who arrived with Waititu at the EACC offices, the governor had travelled since Friday evening and only got back on Saturday.
“He arrived last (Saturday) evening and he has presented himself now to the authorities. There was confusion,” Kipchumba Karori stated as quoted by The Standard Media.
The lawyer defended the governor citing that the governor was not on the run.
"It is not possible for one to run away from the justice system, more so when it's a governor... it's not possible that the governor was on the run," Kipchumba Karori stated as quoted by The Nation.
The detectives had unsuccessfully raided Governor Waititu's homes on Saturday morning. They could not locate him at any of his known residences. The EACC consequently called on the governor together with other suspects including his wife to surrender.
Governor Waititu's wife Susan Ndung'u and five other suspects are however still at large.
