State House Digital and Diaspora Communication Director Dennis Itumbi on Wednesday had a rough day on social media after posting photos purportedly of DP William Ruto's wife, Rachel Ruto donating foodstuffs to hunger hit Turkana.
In the photos, Mama Rachel Ruto could be seen handing over foodstuff to humanitarian groups with Itumbi indicating that she is among the people who have already visited Turkana.
But a section of social media users were quick to note that the photos were taken in 2014, contrary to Itumbi's information, a move that led to his onslaught for the better part of Wednesday.
"System ya wakora led by Itumbi @OleItumbi busted sharing old photos to showcase how they have spent Sh2billion they took from government for relief food (within a week). Why is DP Ruto doing this to suffering and dying Kenyans?" wondered Phelix G Cord.
Another user said: "Mama Rachael Ruto you're such a decent godly woman. But the man you married, DP Ruto with his blogger, Dennis Itumbi will make you miss the kingdom of heaven....if such a thing exist."
But a much humbled Itumbi, who had pulled down the photos, would later on post an apology, conceding that he had been misguided over the photos, although it didn't help either since social media users criticised his approach to issues.
"I apologize for images I shared here earlier.Mama Rachel Ruto was not in TurkanaI relied on unverified images. This was my mistake and I am sorry.I have since deleted them.May the record reflect the true position and my apology too.Jioni poa," he wrote.
Even though media reports indicate that over ten people have died in the hunger stricken Northern Kenya, Deputy President William Ruto has vehemently denied the claims, terming the reports as 'fake news'.
