Four fishermen are believed to have drowned in the Indian Ocean after their boat capsized on July 9.
Mombasa police commander Johnston Ipara, their boat capsized after it was knocked by strong waves at around 11pm waves as they sailed back from high seas where they had gone fishing.
Ahmed Ali, Eddy Pazi, Changwa and Mohamed Harun, sailed deep into the ocean before meeting their death after starting their journey from Mokomani in Nyali at 9pm.
"But we turned back and headed to the shores after noticing that the tide was growing stronger. As we started sailing back, the boat was hit by strong waves and capsized,” narrated Jeffry Matano, a survivor.
"We were six. We held onto the boat but left it after about one hour when it began to sink. We started swimming to the shores before another wave hit and separated us. It was at night so we could not see each other,” he added.
“I lost touch with my colleagues until about 6am when I was able to spot one of them."
Rescue operations are still underway according to the Kenya Rescue Divers team leader, Moses Sila.
Mombasa and the neighbouring coastal counties such as Kwale, and Kilifi have been experiencing heavy winds following a notice from the county government.
Residents have since been urged to keep from beaches until the situation calms.
