In the run-up to the Migori senatorial by-election late last year, the race narrowed down between two candidates.
These were Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate Ochilo Ayacko and his Federal Party of Kenya (FPK) counterpart Eddy Oketch.
So strong was the Oketch that ODM party chief and opposition leader Raila Odinga found it too risky to leave the campaign job to his allies.
Consequently, he ended up camping in the county for half a week to drum support for Ayacko, a former Energy Cabinet Minister.
Similarly, Oketch is likely to once again cause havoc in the county for the same seat in the 2022 general elections.
It's only that this time he is very likely to rejoin the ODM party after losing out twice in the last 3 years.
He lost to ODM's Ben Oluoch Okello in 2017 before his second loss and has very likely learnt his lesson.
He must have realized that the region is an opposition bedrock and trying to turn tables on the party only lands one on the losing end.
Until now there has not emerged any serious candidate eyeing the seat, with Ayacko very likely to try his luck for the gubernatorial seat in the seat once again.
This is after losing to Governor Okoth Obado in 2017.
Oketch's twin attempts have made him a popular figure in the region, the only option left is to align himself with the Orange party.
It is likely that he will begin showing his interest early enough and will be on the front line in spreading Raila's manifesto in the case that Odinga vies for the presidency.
With the ODM ticket in his pocket, then he will be unstoppable.
