Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula will face detectives over his alleged links to fake gold scandal, DCO George Kinoti has confirmed.
The Bungoma senator has been adversely mentioned in the scandal that saw a Saudi Royal from Dubai conned over Sh250 million. At least 15 people were arrested on Monday in relation to the scam.
On Thursday, the lead detective said Mr Wetangula is a person of interest and must be interrogated with other top suspects.
“He is a person of interest and we shall be interrogating him and all others mentioned to determine their degree of involvement,” said Mr Kinoti.
Flashy businessman Zaheer Jhanda and his counterpart Don Bosco Gichana are also likely to be questioned. Already, chief suspect Jared Otieno has been arrested.
In a tweet last year, Wetangula was in Dubai where he held meetings 'focusing on how to improve relationship with Dubai'. Detectives will investigate reasons behind his trip.
“Have had a full day of meetings in Dubai focusing on how to improve trade ties between Kenya and the UAE,” he said at that time.
Earlier this week, Wetangula's personal assistant Chris Mandu said the senator his a victim in the gold scam and not an actor as it's speculated.
“It’s very unfortunate that some people are now trying to politicise the whole matter in which the senator lost huge amounts of money,” Mr Mandu said.
