A 2018 report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) recorded that the county has the highest number of people above 18 years in the county who are single and have never been married before at 35.7 per cent followed by Nandi, Baringo and Mombasa.

Christine Chemutai, a Maize trader and a single lady in Eldoret admits that most of the men are no longer engaging in the long term relationship that eventually result to the marriage.

“More men are mature without mindset of moving into marriage with ladies flopping with them. They only prefer a come-we-stay kind of life that has no mutual binding,” Chemutai said adding that she has no interest of flanking with any man since the estranged lover left her with a 5-year-old boy evading the parental responsibilities.

She further cited that ladies who have come off age, above 30 years have no hope of getting married since men prefer young and upcoming girls in the region.

Mark Some, 32, a mechanic, blamed women for adopting money in the relationship claiming that he prefers living alone than to get attached to young ladies who prioritizes money than being committal to the mutual acceptance of love.

“The so called slay queens are not suitable to be wife material. Their main subject in the relationships is money and what sustains them is also money,” said Some.

A veteran teacher from a local primary school in Eldoret, David Karonei on his part said that in the contemporary society, getting married is no longer and obligation as men have alternated marriage with just cohabiting with women seasonally only to dump them whenever they get inconvenienced.

“Marriage is not like our days where men and women were socially mandated to get into.Young men are jobless and they are demanded to provide hence they rather stay single without formal tie with their lovers, any can move out and with the advent of education, it has equalized both gender in empowerment to independently seek on its own,” Mwalimu Karonei stated.
