Police officers in Bungoma on Wednesday arrested a Form Three girl who threw her baby in a toilet shortly after giving birth.
Fortunately the baby was saved in time.
The 19-year-old, Maline Khayanga left home on Tuesday allegedly to visit her grandmother.
Later on in the evening, she complained of stomach and backaches before proceeding to the bedroom to rest.
She experienced labour pains at midnight and then delivered a baby girl without any help. It is at this point that she threw the newly-born baby into a pit latrine.
According to Violet Wafula who is a relative, she was informed at around 1:00 am on Wednesday morning that someone in the neighbourhood had aborted.
"When I went home, at around 1:00 pm I received reports that someone had committed an abortion and thrown the baby into my in-law Keya's toilet (Wakati nilienda nyumbani, kufika saa saba nikapata ripoti ya kwamba kuna mtoto mtu amefanya abortion ametoa mtoto na ametupa kwa choo ya shemeji Keya)," Violet Wafula she narrated.
The following day, her grandmother discovered the baby who was crying from the toilet. She then called the area administrative officers who rescued the baby.
The girl together with her mother were arrested. The infant is recuperating in hospital.
