The proposals by Building Bridges Initiative team must be subjected to the people for a final decision, Raila Odinga's spokesman has insisted.
President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila received the report on Tuesday, which has recommended a raft of changes in government and administration of the country.
Despite calls to have the changes subjected to the parliamentary initiative, Dennis Onyango took to twitter saying only a referendum will cement the changes.
"The battle is moving to the people guys. There shall be a referendum. The people, not the MPs will decide Kenya’s future. MPs come and go. The people remain," he said.
His sentiments have been backed by Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga, who said the parliamentary initiative will derail the changes.
"Meanwhile any amendments must be pursued through a popular initiative as envisaged in art 257; parliamentary capture must be avoided - the 12th Parliament has not raised a 2/3rds quorum since inception - let's take this to the people," she tweeted.
Already, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has asked the leadership not to subject the changes to a referendum, arguing that it will be a waste of time.
"From the first impression of the BBI report, I have faith that we can sort all of the items proposed therein through Constitutional amendments by way of Parliamentary initiative as contemplated under Article 256," he tweeted on Tuesday.
The team leaning to deputy president William Ruto has already supported the document despite initial opposition witnessed for the last one year.
