For years, Mr Odinga had depended on his wife Ida, Dr Oburu Oginga, Senator James Orengo and fundamentally, Prof Anyang' Nyong'o.

But in recent years, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has rapidly risen ranks within the party, a move that has seen him involved in almost all vital decisions Mr Odinga makes.

Unknown to many, Junet surfaced in the stairs of Harambee House accompanying Mr Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta during the famous 2018 handshake.

In a function at Migori recently, Junet admitted that he's one of influential decision makers within Raila's team, promising to deliver.

"Mimi siongei kienyeji kienyeji. Mimi naongea kutoka kwa jikoni. Hata sahii najua kile ambacho tunapanga. Juzi mliniona kwa meeting ya Raila na Uhuru," he said.

(I just don't speak without facts. I speak as an insider and whatever I say is verified. The other day you saw only me when Uhuru brokered truce with Raila).

Born in 1977 in Migori, Junet Mohamed went to prestigious Lenana House before joining the University of Nairobi where he did a management course.

In 2003, he was nominated to as councillor, clinching the mayorship seat later. He started involving himself in national politics leading to his victory at Suna East in 2013.

He became the first Somali to be elected to parliament in Nyanza, a region dominated by ethnic Luo. He has since stamped his authority as Raila's most trusted lieutenant.

Upon his reelection in 2017, Junet was appointed Minority Chief Whip. He also doubles as ODM Director of Elections, a post he was given two years ago.

“Junet is not only Baba’s man in southern Nyanza, he is also a national errand boy. He is a trusted emissary. He is also a good negotiator,” said an ODM insider.

In 2018, Junet led campaigns in Migori that saw Ochillo Ayacko winning senatorial seat. There is claims that he could run for Migori gubernatorial seat in 2022.

With Mr Odinga now carrying out radical changes within his ODM party, there is no doubt that Junet will play an important role within his inner circle team.

“I can tell you that we have recruited new people to our team as part of our preparations. People like Senator Sam Ongeri, Amos Wako are part of our team. We also have people from Jubilee who are now working with us,” said John Mbadi.
