Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) announced restoring normalcy at the base, after six hours of intensive fighting.

The attack, KDF confirmed, left five terrorists dead. There were reports that three more bodies were recovered later on.

Without giving an exact number, Dr Matiang'i on Monday said all those who participated in the attack were killed.

Dr Matiang'i also revealed an ongoing push to have Al-Shabaab blacklisted as a terrorist group. US and Somalia have opposed the move.

“Monica and I were in the US and we have tried to persuade our friends that these criminals must be classified as terrorists...that way, we would be able to decimate this group,” Matiang'i said.

US Senator Jim Risch who chairs the Foreign Relations committee also condoled with those who lost their lives.

“I am saddened to learn that American and Kenyan lives were lost during a heinous terrorist attack on a Kenya-US operating base early this morning,” Republican Senator from Idaho tweeted.

According to the US Africa Command, three US citizens were killed during the attack. One was a soldier and two contractors.
