Suba South Member of Parliament John Mbadi has mounted his case as to why Parliament should not be allowed to decide the fate of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report.
Speaking on Saturday, the outspoken Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker held the view that the legislature was too divided, to be allowed to deliberate on the game-changing document.
He said the people of Kenya deserve the chance to determine the fate of BBI, and the only way to afford them that chance, is through a referendum.
"Let's not cheat Kenyans that we can make this reforms pass through Parliament. There is no way you can have the reforms go through Parliament. That Parliament is divided, we have Kieleweke and we have Tangatanga in Jubilee and we have rebels in ODM like Aisha Jumwa," Mbadi said.(1:21-1:41)
Mbadi's remarks come in the context of great uncertainty about how the BBI report should be adopted.
A section of the political class want the recommendations collapsed into a Bill and taken to Parliament for deliberation, terming a referendum wasteful.
On the other hand, the section vouching for a referendum contend that it is the only way that the Kenyan people can own the document.
President Uhuru Kenyatta officially launched the BBI report on Wednesday, and urged Kenyans to read it with an open mind before making a decision on what to do with it.
