Nakuru County officials are on the spot for allegedly rounding up street children and dumping them at a forest in Baringo.
The assembly's committee on Labour and Social Services on Thursday probed the February incident that saw more than 40 street children dumped at Torongo area in Baringo.
The committee wanted the department of public service to explain why the children were taken to Baringo and who gave the order.
Appearing before the committee, former Nakuru deputy enforcement inspector Boniface Lolkiompo, who served in the department said he is not aware of who gave the order.
Lolkiompo said he was outside the office when the orders were issued adding that he was not informed about the exercise of rounding up street children.
The committee heard that the County Secretary, CEC for Public Service or the Chief Officer are the only people who can give orders to enforcement officers.
He said that such an exercise of rounding up of street children and moving them to different places has been there since he joined the department in 1993.
He, however, said the exercise in February was done differently adding that he was against such treatment of the street children and he was transferred for condemning how the exercise was conducted.
“The incident occurred when I was away representing the county in a court case. I am not sure about who gave the orders of the three.”
“Although it was not clear to me who was behind the act, I condemned those involved. Instead, I got a transfer which to me was a punishment for having a different stand from the bosses on the matter,” Lolkiompo stated.
The children after they were rescued claimed that county officials harassed them for allegedly harassing residents and littering the town.
