Commuters were on Monday left stranded in several bus stations in Eldoret town as the crackdown on non-compliant Public Serice vehicles (PSVs) begun.

Hundreds of locals within Eldoret town residential estates were also forced to trek to their workplaces as there were very few matatus on the road.

Even the few that were operating had hike fares by more than double. In almost all routes where passengers were paying Sh30, it had been tripled to Sh100.

Traders were equally affected as they could not get transport for their goods.

Some of the stranded commuters asked the government to give the matatu operator more time to comply with the new rules so as to ensure the transport sector is not paralysed.

"I want to urge the government to come to our rescue since we are suffering. A place where I used to pay Sh30 today we are forced to pay Sh100," said John Korir, a stranded passenger who residents in a residential estate in Eldoret.
