Embakasi East legislator Paul Ongili alias Babu Owino has opposed plans by the government to regulate churches.
In a Facebook post on Monday afternoon, the young ODM legislator said no individual has the power to curtail believers' freedom of worship as it is their constitutional right.
He expressed dismay over the proposal by a section of politicians to tax religious organisations, arguing that no one including Parliament has the moral authority to control God's work.
"..I was shocked when I heard some people suggesting the taxation of churches and vetting of religious leaders. What God has given, truly no man can take away. Not even Parliament," said Owino.
The MP made the remarks after he joined thousands of Kenyans in a peace prayer rally at Uhuru Park. The rally was organised by Repentance and Holiness Church leader Prophet David Owuor.
He assured worshippers that he will stand firm in defending religion by ensuring the political class respects the citizens' freedom of worship.
"I wish to assure all worshippers that I will be on the front line in defending the Faith and ensuring the political class respects freedom of worship," said Owino.
"We will not allow the devil’s hand to find its way into our society through politicians. We pray for continued peace, unity and prosperity for our nation while always giving thanks," he added.
