Couples with fertility problems in the North Rift region have a reason to smile after the Eldoret Hospital launched an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) centre.
According to Dr Manish Pandia, the head of the gynaecology department at the hospital, the facility will help couples to fulfil their desire for fertility and parenthood by giving them the treatment using IVF.
IVF is the process of fertilization by extracting eggs, retrieving a sperm sample, and then manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish. The embryo(s) is then transferred to the uterus.
“According to global statistics two in every 10 couples suffer from infertility being the reason behind us starting IVF to help patients with similar problems,” said Dr Manish.
He noted that patients will no longer have to incur expenses of travelling to India or Nairobi to get the services as it will now be offered at the facility.
“Our fertility centre has a state of the art operation theatre and embryology laboratory with laminar fair low creating a sterile environment, therefore, increasing the rate of success,” noted Dr Manish.
He further expressed concerns that infertility problems have not been given the attention it deserves in the country despite the fact that many people suffer from it.
