Nation Media Group reporter Rose Wangui on Tuesday bagged a major global journalism award, becoming the latest Kenyan to excel in the international scene.
The feature reporter won Knight International Journalism Award for her dedication towards exposing taboo in African culture among other stories.
International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ) said Ms Wangui was selected because her stories had led to improvements in conditions she brings to light.
“She has been selected because her stories have led to major improvements in the conditions she brings to light. She will be presented her award at ICFJ’s 35th Annual Awards Dinner on November 7, 2019, in Washington, DC,” ICFJ communication manager Zainab Imam, said.
A tweet from ICFJ said: “@RoseWangui of #Kenya has tackled topics such as sexual bondage of young girls and Kenyan women who went to work in the Persian Gulf and wound up dead. Her stories have led to major improvements in the conditions she brings to light.”
Her victory comes just a few months after a Kenyan teacher, Peter Tabichi, won Global Teaching Award in Dubai. He will receive Sh100 million for the victory.
President Uhuru Kenyatta joined in celebrations where he awarded Tabichi's school in Nakuru, Keriko Secondary school, an additional Sh20 million for infrastructural development.
