A section of Kisumu residents given mixed reactions shortly after the Supreme Court upheld the election of Homabay Governor Cyprian Otieno Awiti.
“The judge has taken too long before giving us the verdict but finally, it is out. As an ODM supporter, I fully support the verdict. Governor Awiti should now serve the people of Homabay fairly,” said Fred Ouma.
"It has been a long court battle. I live in Kisumu but come from Homabay, I voted for Oyugi Magwanga. I was hoping that Awiti’s win will be annulled but that has not been the case. I do not agree with the Court ruling but I respect it,” said one Shamsa Anyango.
In a ruling delivered by Justice Boma Ojwang on Thursday afternoon, the Supreme Court declined to uphold Homabay High Court and Kisumu’s Court of appeal’s decision that nullified Awiti’s win last year.
"The prayer by the petitioner for a new by election is hereby disallowed. The election results will stand as was declared by the IEBC," ruled the Judge.
Earlier, Kisumu County’s Railways Ward Representative Pastor David Arao had urged residents to embrace outcome of the ruling whatever the verdict.
“As a politician, I cannot speak much about a case that is in court, but I would like to urge residents of the county to accept the court’s verdict. I know it will be bad for some people but we must accept and move on,” he said in an exclusive interview with Hivisasa.
