Six people suspected of organizing a bhang smoking competition were on Monday remanded by Senior resident magistrate Agneta Ogonda.
The six were part of revellers arrested on Sunday night at Kenol town in Murang’a County for smoking the illegal substance. Ogonda gave police seven days to complete investigation.
According to Harun Kamuren, an officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), police were interested in the source of bhang.
“Police are interested to establish the source of the bhang, and to be able to find out if a vehicle belonging to the bar owner was involved in the transportation of the bhang. Mobile phones of the suspects were also confiscated and forwarded to DCI Cyber Crime Unit for further analysis," Kamuren stated.
Police are reportedly said to have acted on a tip-off.
“Members of public assisted us in nabbing the suspects who had a party dubbed Rastafarian Party. For one to be allowed in the hotel, he had to buy at least two rolls of bhang; we have initiated a crackdown to arrest more after bhang uptake has risen in the area,” Murang’a South sub-county Police Commander John Ondit said.
The six suspects who were arraigned before a Kigumo court were the organizers of the party, the owner of Le Zeros club and a disc jockey (DJ).
