ODM leader Raila Odinga has claimed that he is a member of the Wanga community.
Speaking on Sunday in Kibra constituency as he campaigned for ODM candidate Imran Okoth, Odinga said that he is the 13th descendant of Nabongo Mumia.
"You know also that Raila Odinga is a member of the Wanga community. I am the 13th descendant of Nabongo Wanga (Naunajua Raila vile vile ni Mwanga, unajua namna hiyo. Mimi ni mjukuu wa kumi na tatu wa Nabongo Wanga), " the former Prime Minister said in a video shared on Twitter by KTN . (3:58-4:08)
He made the remarks while meeting members of the Luhya community living in Kibra where he urged the voters not to cast their votes along ethnic lines but to base their decision at the ballot on the abilities of the candidates on offer.
Political pundits see the claim of being a member of the Wanga community as an attempt of the ODM leader to endear the party's candidate to Luhya voters in Kibra.
The Luhya vote is seen as vitally important in the race that could ultimately tip the scales.
Amani National Congress (ANC) party is banking on the ethnic extraction of its leader Musalia MUdavadi, who is a Luhya, to appeal to Luhyas to vote for ANC's candidate Eliud Owalo.
