Ombara’s warning comes after a section of a two storey residential building collapsed in Kona Mbuta Area, Manyatta estate on Monday morning trapping several people inside.

She said that Kisumu like many other towns in the country is grappling with a lack of enough houses, but that should not be used as an excuse to use sub standard building materials during construction.

“There is no shortcut as a far as complying with construction standards is concerned,” she said when she visited Manyatta on Monday.

According to Benson Maweru, the County Police Commander, six people were rescued from the incident and no one was reported dead.

Most of the tenants are said to have been out of their houses on their daily errands at the time of the incident.

A total of 17 families’ reportedly occupied houses on the building.

In June 2013, a similar incident involving a five-storey building under construction left 7 people dead in Kisumu.

Many others, who were mainly passers-by, were injured and rushed to different hospitals.
