Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala needs urgent checkup by doctors due to his hypertension condition, Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has said.

Malala was arrested at a Kisumu hotel on Friday over alleged connections to Matungu killings. Over 18 people have been killed by unknown gangsters, prompting an emergency trip by Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i on Thursday.

And on Saturday, Governor Nyong'o urged the police to allow the ANC senator to access his lawyers and doctors in compliance with the constitution. According to home, he's being held incommunicado at Kisumu Central Police Station.

"I this morning called on @Senate_KE Deputy Minority Leader @Cleophasmalala at Kisumu Central Police Station where he is being detained incommunicado. I urge @PoliceKE to allow him access his lawyers and doctors for check up on high blood pressure," Nyong'o said.

Dr Fred Matiang'i had promised fireworks on Thursday, insisting that all perpetrators would face the law. More GSU officers were deployed in the region which has seen increased violence in recent months.

Kakamega Police Commander Wilkister Vera said Malala was arrested following an order by Dr Matiang'i. Also arrested was former Sports minister Rashid Echesa.

The police boss said, "We summoned them following a directive by Matiang'i for all people linked to the incidents in Matungu to be investigated."

Malala accused Deputy President William Ruto of orchastrating his arrest. Anti-riot police were deployed in Kisumu police station after a crowd started building up after his arrest.
