It is an open secret that Senator James Orengo will vie for the Siaya gubernatorial seat in 2022.
It should be a smooth sailing venture for Orengo, arising from the fact that the current governor Cornel Amoth Rasanga will be retiring in 2022.
However, in Siaya County politics, there is one man who has the political experience, the vigor, power, know-how, development record and the popularity to stop Orengo from succeeding Governor Rasanga.
This man is Nicholas Odero Gumbo.
The former Rarieda MP vied for the Siaya gubernatorial seat last year as an independent candidate and gave Governor Rasanga a real run for his money.
Gumbo managed 175, 714 votes against Rasanga’s 192, 376 votes.
The former MP is yet to give an indication of future plans, but Orengo must brace for a do or die contest against Gumbo, in the race to become the next Siaya County boss.
On the other hand, Orengo is a very popular figure in Siaya County politics. During the ODM party primaries, the lawyer garnered 140, 748 votes without campaigning.
His closest rival against Argwings Kodhek managed 9,582 votes.
During the August 8, 2018 general elections, he got a staggering 368, 411 votes against a meager 6, 189 amassed by Jubilee Party’s Jacob Ochieng Oluoch.
But the gubernatorial contest is a different ball game all together, and Gumbo is the man to beat if Orengo is to climb the political ladder from Senator to Governor.
