John Mutinda died over the weekend after he plunged his car into the Indian Ocean at the Likoni crossing Channel, Mombasa County.

It was then revealed by Mr Oguna that the man might have died due to his mental illness.

Oguna who spoke at the channel after the body of the deceased had been removed from the ocean bed said mental disorder might have triggered the man into taking his own life.

However, the deceased's widow told K24 that what the government said was baseless for there was none from the family who had been reached to give her husband's past health records.

She urged Mr Oguna to wait for a proper report from the investigating agencies so that the cause of his action thus death can be determined.

“The Government spokesperson was quick to claim that my husband committed suicide. What information did he rely on to arrive at that conclusion? While at the Kenya Ferry Services headquarters [on Saturday], he never even said a word to me. Who is the source of his claim that my spouse was mentally disturbed? I urge the State spokesperson to let investigators conduct independent probe to ascertain what exactly led to the incident that killed my husband,” Ruth Mueni said.

On the hand, the deceased's mother, Musangi Mutinda, blamed  Ruth Mueni, the wife, for her son's death.

She said her son died due to depression because of marriage issues with his wife.

John Mutinda's case at the channel is not the first one. In September, a mother, Mariam Kagenda and her daughter Amanda Mutheu also died at the channel after their car slid from a vessel and plunged into the ocean.

Unlike Mutinda's body which was retrieved just after a day, the two were retrieved after endless efforts of 13 days by a team of divers who were led by the Kenya Navy.
