In a tweet on Monday, Raila said that he was saddened by the death of the veteran leader.

Rubia died on Monday at his Karen Home in Nairobi.

It remains unclear what Rubia, who was the first African Mayor of Nairobi, was hailing from.

Raila said that he received the news with deep shock, adding that the void left behind by the politician cannot be refilled.

"I am saddened by the passing on of Hon Charles Rubia, the first African Mayor of Nairobi who also gallantly served the nation in other capacities including as a cabinet minister. He played a key role in the liberation struggle of our nation and was always at the forefront," he tweeted.

The ODM leader also said that Rubia was detained for fighting for the rights of the oppressed in the 90s.

"He paid a great price for his stand and was detained at the height of the struggle but he never wavered. I am proud to have known and worked with him. My condolences go out to his family at this difficult moment and may his soul Rest in Eternal Peace," he added.

Leaders from different parts have also sent their messages of condolence to the family of the deceased.

The burial date of Charles Rubia is yet to be communicated as condolence messages trickle in.
