A decision by former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama to endorse Deputy President William Ruto's presidency could cement the "death" of NASA.
On Wednesday, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna took a swipe at Muthama, a move that could ignite tensions.
Mr Muthama endorsed DP Ruto on Wednesday, even though he did not rule out Raila Odinga's presidency in 2022.
“Now that Uhuru is retiring, the next President will be either Ruto or Raila Odinga. And as a community, we should do a careful calculation to ensure we do not get lost,” said Muthama as quoted by Standard.
He went on, “If President Uhuru Kenyatta has not asked MPs to impeach Ruto over widespread allegations of corruption, why should the Kamba community be swayed by corruption tags on the DP by his political haters?”
And Sifuna now terms Muthama's latest move as worst kept secret, perhaps indicating that ODM has often suspected Wiper's sincerity in the NASA coalition.
"Worst. Kept. Secret," tweeted Mr Sifuna, a close ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Wiper party has supported Raila Odinga's presidential ambitions twice. Mr Kalonzo Musyoka, Muthama's close ally, deputised Raila in 2013 and 2017 polls.
Recently, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua took a swipe at Mr Odinga, accusing him of betraying the party despite the support it gave him.
“For the longest time now, Raila has demonstrated to us that he has no respect for Wiper and Kalonzo. We will not force him to work with us when he is clearly not interested,” Wambua said.
