A federal court in the United States of America on Wednesday sentenced former drug lord Joaquin Guzman to life after a long court tussle.
The 62-year-old Mexican who is popularly known as El Chapo was also handed another 30 years after being found after being convicted for 10 charges, which follows his February conviction.
He was found guilty of charges revolving around drug trafficking and has also been directed to pay a $12.6 billion fine in forfeiture.
The famous drug baron will serve his sentence at the maximum prison in Florence, Colorado, according to his lawyer William Purpura.
Purpura questioned the decision behind his sentencing in the US, considering that Guzman engaged in his said crimes while leading the Sinaloa drug gang in Mexico.
He expressed confidence that El Chapo will also be raising similar concerns.
"He has an absolute right of allocution, and I'd be shocked if he did not allocute, speak today and I do anticipate he will speak today.
I think he's going to indicate that he was wrongfully brought to the United States, that he was kept in horrific conditions for a long period of time, but also he wanted to thank the guards at MCC for treating him in a humane manner and also the U.S. Marshals for treating him well during trial," he said.
Other charges that were heaped on him include cocaine importation conspiracy, cocaine distribution conspiracy and illegal use of firearms.
