Succession battles took a twist on Monday when Mt. Kenya legislators supporting DP William Ruto's bid confronted those opposed to him.
A group led by Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata which has offered conditional support to Ruto was blocked from tabling an agenda in which they were to discuss Uhuru's future after 2022.
"We had an agenda to discuss Uhuru because we don't have a kingpin other than him. The Moses Kuria led team blocked the agenda on pretext that it was premature. The debate will however go on," said Kang'ata, a close ally of Uhuru.
This comes amid claims that the legislators are under strict instructions to push for creation of PM position which Uhuru will occupy after 2022.
But for Kuria, a fierce defender of DP Ruto, confessed that his team blocked the agenda because it was unnecessary during Naivasha retreat.
"For me I don't think it's important to discuss politics. This retirement issues never came out during Daniel Moi or Mwai Kibaki era. Why now? Let's focus on s and we had a nice reason as to why we blocked them," said Kuria during an interview with Citizen TV.
The Mt. Kenya region is divided over Ruto's candidature with the opposing team trying to push for constitutional changes to have Uhuru remaining in power.
Sources say that the team allied to Uhuru is secretly pushing to have Uhuru work with Raila as Prime Minister and President respectfully.
Despite the open differences between the two factions, a source in Ruto's campaign team confided that Uhuru had called the MPs and advised them against discussing his retirement.
