Since the completion and opening of the ultra-modern Thika Superhighway six years ago, transport business along this route has been on an upward trajectory.
Matatus and buses belonging to various Saccos and companies respectively now ferry passengers daily going to different destinations along route 237.
Along with these matatus and buses have come various types of conductors commonly known in street slang as 'makanga'.
Many of these makangas' character and behaviour vary from one matatu Sacco or bus company to the other. Here we look at the three common types of 'makangas' you are likely to find along this route.
1. The respectful/professional type. These conductors are by all definitions respectful, professional and wary of their customers' needs. You will for instance never argue with them over change, lose luggage under their watch, complain of being alighted at the wrong stage, suffer loud music among other things.
These conductors are known to be well dressed and their personal hygiene is adorable.
2. The careless type. This brand of 'makangas' is the exact opposite of number one above. They are unprofessional in almost all aspects and simply don't give a damn about the passengers' needs.
To them, money comes first. In fact, you are only a darling to them when they are begging you to travel with their matatus. Once you are in and have paid, expect hell to break loose anytime.
The makangas will bad-mouth you on the slightest opportunity, put ear-shattering music, others will refuse with your change, ignore complaints of careless driving, alight you at the wrong stage just to name but a few.
Their personal grooming resembles their characters as the majority of them are shabbily dressed in uniforms that rarely 'encounter' with water. This brand of conductors dominates many matatus plying this route.
3. The 'wanati' type: These conductors mostly operate in minibuses plying between Ruiru and Nairobi. Their vehicles are full of street graffiti both inside and outside.
The conductors are trendy, urban and their personal hygiene is great. They are neither too sensitive to customers' needs nor can they be said to be so careless as those in the second category above.
