Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo has said they will prove Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu’s innocence on the corruption charges leveled against her.
Maanzo claims that Mwilu is a victim of ‘we shall revisit’ remark allegedly made by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017.
Speaking to journalists at Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on Wednesday, the Wiper MP said the charges leveled against Mwilu are malicious.
Maanzo said some people could be plotting for Mwilu’s removal and opted to use corruption as a way to oust her out of office.
“We shall prove that Mwilu is innocent in due course," Maanzo who is among lawyers representing the DCJ said.
The Makueni MP criticized the investigative and prosecution agencies for rushing to present the Deputy Chief Justice in court.
He said the charges of corruption leveled against Mwilu ought to be handled by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka who also spoke to journalists at the Milimani law courts defended Mwilu against the allegations.
He said the manner in which the DCJ was handled by detectives was unconstitutional.
“I want to stress the provision of article 50 sub article 2 of the constitution that says that the right to fair trial of any citizen is basic,” Kalonzo said.
The Deputy Chief Justice was arrested on Tuesday over corruption allegations.
She is out on Sh5 million personal bond even as the High Court issued orders suspending her prosecution.
