Police in Wajir County have killed a suspected Al Shabaab militant in Tarbaj sub county following a gun battle on Thursday.
Confirming the incident, Wajir County commissioner Loyford Kibaara said the security officers came in contact with four suspected militants during an ongoing operation to flush out the militants.
Mr Kibaara said the security officers confronted the militants and challenged the suspects but they fired back to the soldiers leading to exchange of fire.
One of the Al Shabaab militants was killed during the confrontation and another one was seriously injured before he was whisked away by the other militants.
The county commissioner said the militants who managed to escape fled into the bushes after they were overpowered by the officers adding that they are pursuing the suspects.
“I want to assure all of you that we will not leave the area until we find all the militants or those who sympathize with them,” he said as quoted by a local daily.
Mr Kibaara said the soldiers will remain vigilant and would continue to relentlessly pursue the terrorists wherever they may be to ensure there is peace and security in the region.
He also warned members of the public against providing the militants with food and water.
“We are not after innocent people at all so let them relax and co-operate with the officers in this fight and people should not worry about that,” said the county commissioner.
The security operation to flush out the militants was launched after eight security officers were killed in an IED attack in Bojigaras last week.
