A section of Rift Valley MPs have sensationally claimed Deputy President William Ruto is disinterested with affairs of area maize farmers because 'he has interest' in the crop.
Amidst fierce politics surrounding maize farming, MPs Alfred Keter (Nandi Hills), Silas Tiren ( Moiben) and Joshua Kuttuny of Cherangany now say that Ruto is planting 500,000 hectares of maize in Congo to supplement already flooded local market.
"We don't want to hear about 2022. We want you to speak about maize crisis. These farmers want nothing less than Sh3,600 per bag. We are tired with your fund raisers. Farmers want good market for maize, tea and better roads," Keter said in a statement.
On Friday, Ruto who attended a burial ceremony at his Turbo constituency, concentrated on controversial Gender Bill which is due to be debated on Tuesday.
But the three legislators have dismissed him, claiming that he's ready to strangle maize farming besides crucifying their political ambitions.
"You just want to crucify all of us. We know you're planting 500,000 Ha of maize in Congo. You're talking of avocado yet you're building a factory in Botswana. Stop 2022 politics which you've started on a wrong foot," he added.
The legislators asked President Uhuru Kenyatta, whom they termed as their saviour to intervene and have the maize farming revamped again.
Mr Ruto, who traversed Gusii region for the better part of Saturday, steered off the maize farming debate, instead asked MPs to back the gender Bill fronted by Majority Leader Aden Duale.
