Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko now says Jubilee Party will have no problem endorsing Deputy President (DP) William Ruto's 2022 presidential bid should he first support March 9, 2018 handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Despite observing it was early to speak about succession politics, Sonko did not hesitate to point out that the DP stands a better chance of becoming Kenya's 5th President, but noted that will only be realised if the agrees to back Uhuru-Raila unity pact and the resultant Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).
"If the Deputy President agrees to support the handshake and BBI, we would have no problem of supporting the DP after the President's term is over. Now it is premature to talk about 2022," he said on Sunday.
Speaking when hosted on K24's Punchline show, the county boss said he was a big supporter of Ruto, but insisted his focus for now was to rally behind the handshake and support Uhuru in building his legacy and delivering his pledges to Kenyans.
"Absolutely, the president has not been given enough time to work for Kenyans. He has good initiatives. There is the affordable housing and Big 4 agenda," Sonko said.
"I will support the handshake for now. I will support the BBI... I am big supporter of the Deputy President. The handshake has brought peace to this country. We must put aside our political differences and support the President," added the flamboyant Governor.
