Former Kibwezi MP Kalembe Ndile has defended Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko over claims that he has an unfinished jail term.
Speaking in Machakos on Sunday, Ndile, who was accompanied by Youth Leader Mumo Makundi, said that the allegations levelled against the governor are meant to distract the general public from the rot at Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
Kalembe affirmed that the sentence was quashed by the High Court, adding that Sonko is now a free agenda.
He also asked why EACC sleuths have cleared him to contest for three consecutive elections yet they were not aware of the claims levelled against him. Ndile and Makundi presented documents showing that the term was quashed.
Documents forwarded by the Prison to EACC show that the governor was convicted on March 12, 1998, after he failed to appear in court and he was ordered to pay a fine amounting to Sh200,000 fine or serve six months jail term.
The first time the county boss could not raise the amount in question and opted to be jailed. He was taken to the Shimo la Tewa Prison but it remains unclear how he made it to leave the place. Ndile said that EACC officers must respond before things run out of control.
"If we continue this way we will be heading back to the dark days when leaders used to be silenced using fictitious cases brought by the State," he said.
The governor has on several occasions admitted that he was jailed but denied corruption claims levelled against him.
