Interdenominational prayers scheduled on Saturday at Murang'a which Deputy President William Ruto was to attend have been cancelled for the second time.
Last month, religious leaders insisted that the prayers were on course, despite calling off the prayers on 27th April to allow Deputy President William Ruto attend a funeral to Jonathan Moi.
But with two days to the scheduled prayers, the office of Dr Ruto has yet again cancelled the prayers on grounds that the region expects rains on Saturday following a warning by metrological department.
“We have been cautioned by the Meteorological Department that we shall receive ice rain and it will not be advisable to hold the prayer rally. There is no politics behind the indefinite cancellation of the event and we shall keep the public posted on when to hold the rally,” Mr Nyoro told the Nation by phone.
But despite the latest excuse, the trip by Dr Ruto had divided Mt Kenya leaders with a team allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta vehemently opposing the rally. At least 150 MPs allied to Ruto were set to attend.
Mt Kenya Assemblies Forum members Charles Mwangi dismissed Saturday's prayer rally, arguing that it was a clever move to install Dr Ruto the regions political kingpin despite the presence of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“There was nothing like a prayer rally. To me, that was a plan to install the deputy president as the region’s kingpin while we know that the President (Uhuru Kenyatta) is our spokesman,” he said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta's impending retirement has divided leaders from Mt Kenya into two groups. A group called Tanga Tanga has been campaigning for Ruto while another one, Kieleweke, has been anti-Ruto campaigns.
