Police in Kisumu are investigating the killing of a man accused of assaulting two mourners.
27-year-old Oketch Okello was reportedly lynched by a mob and his body was dumped outside the Kisumu Muslim Cemetery, located along the Kisumu-Busia road on Thursday.
The incident was confirmed by Kisumu police boss Benson Maweu, who said that the two persons raised alarm, attracting a mob that lynched the deceased.
He confirmed the Okello, student at a local university was mentally ill and was on medication, adding that one of those reportedly assaulted reported the incident on Wednesday.
“One of those attacked reported the matter to the police but did not give us information on what transpired afterwards. The next day we received reports that a body had been dumped on Kisumu-Busia Road. We went to the scene only to find the body of the student," he told the Standard on Friday.
The deceased had reportedly attempted to escape the angry mob by climbing a tree.
The police boss added that the issue has since been taken over by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further investigations.
“The office of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over the matter for further investigations,” he added.
The body of the deceased was moved to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) morgue.
