South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro has vowed to ensure lightning and thunderstorm arresting devices are installed in all public schools to tackle lightning.
This comes after a student at Nduru Boys High School was struck to death by thunder on Thursday last week.
Speaking at Etago on Saturday, the lawmaker insisted that unnecessary deaths can be curbed.
"I don't want to see students being killed by natural calamities which can be prevented. All public schools across the constituency will have the lightning and thunderstorm arresting devices installed to curb unwanted deaths in future," he stated.
The lawmaker said he will engage Kenya Power in the initiative for the sake of ensuring the safety of learners and teachers.
Osoro further pointed out that residents in places within the constituency prone to lightning and thunderstorm should also consider installing the devices for the sake of their safety.
He challenged parents not to allow children to step out of their houses during this time when the Gusii region is experiencing heavy rains.
"Teachers should not allow children to go home when it is raining as this may risk their lives," he added.
