Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja has cast doubt on whether the October 1st deadline on old Sh1,000 notes will help in weeding out corrupt leaders as pledged by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking during an interview on JKL, Sakaja said that corrupt individuals with the old notes are already up and looking for ways to convert the same into new notes before it is too late.
He noted that the corrupt individuals will not just sit there and wait for the deadline.
The senator, who has been very vocal on matters of national interest, said that the move is laudable but it will not work for the government as it seeks to curb increased cases of massive corruption.
“I do not think the October 1st deadline on old Sh1,000 notes will weed out corrupt individuals. Those who are smart enough to have cash money in their houses will look for smart ways to dispose of it," Sakaja said in a tweet by Citizen TV.
On his part, Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior, who was also part of the interview, asked the Central Bank of Kenya to come clean on the portrait of the founding father of the nation Mzee Jomo Kenyatta on the notes.
He said that the CBK has been confusing Kenyans with the new notes yet it has been given the mandate to give guidelines in regard to the same.
