As the 2022 general elections draw closer, Deputy President William Ruto’s political camp continues to experience more criticism and desertion as witnessed in the ongoing loyalty wrangles within the Jubilee party.
Ruto and his allies believe that they delivered the maximum number of votes President Uhuru Kenyatta needed from the vote-rich Rift Valley region in order to ascend to power in 2013, and later retain the country's top seat in 2017.
For this simple reason, the DP's allies now want Uhuru to endorse Ruto to succeed him, a move that will see him granted an automatic Jubilee party presidential ticket.
However, the truth is Kenyan politics is neither about loyalty nor endorsements. Ruto, his allies and Rift Valley leaders in general, should put in place well-calculated strategies and stop depending on the Mt Kenya ‘debt’.
Secondly, Ruto is one of the richest people in the country and putting up a well-oiled campaign which is one of the necessities in the country's politics should be a simple task.
Ruto is no longer guaranteed the Jubilee party ticket and this is the right time for leaders from the Rift Valley region to form another party which Ruto will vie on in the next polls, in case his 2013 memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Uhuru doesn't materialise.
Unity in the region is also an important factor and Ruto uniting with Baringo Senator Gideon Moi who is currently his rival will play a major role in the victory of the community in 2022.
