Samuel Ayoma who came in second in the election with eight votes against Mvurya’s 24 votes claims the election was not credible. The case was however postponed to Tuesday upon Ayoma’s request.

Mvurya is the first female chairperson of University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA), formerly known as Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU).

Her victory was widely celebrated across the country including the Vice Chancellor of University of Nairobi (UoN) Peter Mbithi.

"Congratulations. Anne Mwangi Mvurya becomes the first female University of Nairobi @uonbi student leader, after nearly 50 years in existence. I wish you well as you serve the students,"   Mbithi had tweeted upon Mvurya’s victory in April.

According to the University Amendment Bill of 2016 which was introduced by the majority leader in the National Assembly Aden Duale, the students elect delegates who in turn elect the Students Council.

"The representatives of each electoral college shall elect the members of the Student Council within 30 days of the election under subsection (1d),” the act states.

This is the second election at UoN after president Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law the University Amendment Bill.
