Two suspected Al-Shabaab militants have been arrested at Tana River County in the coastal region, it has emerged.
County Police Commander Fred Ochieng' on Thursday said the two were arrested following a tip-off from the locals.
According to the locals, six gunmen were sighted in the region, forcing them to immediately report the matter to the police.
While Tana River County has not recorded cases of terror activities, neighbouring Lamu, Garissa, and Wajir have been under attack from the militants.
This comes just a week after President Uhuru Kenyatta asked security chiefs to work closely with locals to flush out the militants from their hideouts.
"The people of Kenya should be rest assured that we will respond robustly and that our nation Kenyan will and shall prevail,” said the President.
Uhuru directed national government officers, agencies and personnel to drive the determined implementation of county action plans to prevent and counter violent extremism.
“Doing this will allow citizens to be more resilient against radicalisation and terrorist propaganda,” the President said.
Early this week, security forces were also able to thwart an Al-Shabaab attack at Lamu after six hours of heavy exchanges of gunfire.
