Raila is not only the biggest political figure in Luo Nyanza but maybe the first or second in the entire nation, but that is not the case when he enters into his departed father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga's home, especially if his brother Oburu Odinga is around.

Raila is the second born son to Jaramogi and according to the Luo culture, he falls below Oburu who is a few years older, simply meaning that Oburu is his senior in matters family and culture and is the ultimate decision maker on issues affecting the Oginga fraternity.

In a Daily Nation publication dated 2006, Oburu confirms that he remains the family chairperson despite living in Raila's shadows politically and being nominated both to Parliament and Cabinet severally on the Orange Party leader's mercy.

''I respect him and he respects me. On the political front, he is my boss. On the domestic level I am the head and chairman of family businesses,'' Oburu was quoted by the paper.

This, traditionally, means that Raila, no matter how many bodyguards he is surrounded by, cannot wash his hands to eat before Oburu in the event that they are together, but assumes the top post in Oburu's absence since he is the second in command.
