State Department for Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has revealed that Kenyans who will benefit from the housing program by the government will be determined using a lottery system.
Speaking on Tuesday night during an interview at Citizen TV, Hinga said each individual who requires a house will be mandated to register and start contributing.
"One has to register and start contributing before a house is allocated to them. A lottery system will be used to determine who gets a house," the PS said.
He added that "under this program, we (government) are able to provide people in social housing interest of 3 per cent for 25 years and those in affordable housing 7 per cent interest for 25 years."
When President Uhuru Kenyatta took office for his second and final term in line with the constitution, he outlined affordable housing as one of the Big Four Agenda.
To achieve the agenda, the government intends to collect a 1.5 per cent levy from every salaried Kenyan that will be used to build the houses.
The move has however been objected by several Kenyans and the courts recently stopped implementation of the plan that was to be rolled out in May.
