Kisumu based human rights activist Boniface Ogutu Akach has said that Kondele Community Justice Centre is planning two activities ahead of the ruling by Kisumu High Court on the inquest to determine the perpetrators of Baby Samantha Pendo’s murder.
“We are requesting well-wishers to join us in filling the courtroom as a show of solidarity with the family. That same evening as from 6-8pm, we shall hold a Candlelight Vigil in solidarity with all victims and survivors of PEVs (Post Election Violence) in Kisumu at Kondele Roundabout,” he said.
The ruling is set for February 14, a few months after the inquest hearings came to an end at the Kisumu High Court on Thursday, November 08, 2018.
The hearing which started in February last year, under Kisumu resident magistrate Beryl Omollo lasted almost ten months, with more than 20 witnesses among them her parents, police, members of the public and human rights defenders testifying in court.
In her ruling, the magistrate is expected to direct relevant bodies to charge those adversely mentioned, as reports from the hearings indicate that the young one was allegedly hit on the head by a police button.
The then 6-months-old Baby Pendo died on August 15 2017, while receiving treatment at the Agha Khan Hospital, three days after police reportedly broke into her parents’ house in Nyalenda.
The officers were reported however to have been on a mission to quell chaos by members of the public, shortly after President Uhuru Kenyatta was announced the winner of the 2017 Presidential elections.
