Children in Garissa on Tuesday celebrated the World Children's day in style, marching through the streets before converging at the Garissa Children Rescue Centre.
While marking the day, the NEP kids sang songs championing for their rights as minors and condemning social ills perpetrated on them by the society.
Among the issues that the youngsters highlighted are the right to education, provision of basic and standard healthcare services and the retrogressive culture of female genital mutilation.
Even as this annual celebration is marked, kids from the expansive North Eastern region are still battling with societal injustices such as forced labor and rape.
It should be remembered that just a month ago, a minor working as a house-help was mistreated by her boss in an incident that can be classified as child labor.
Similarly, rape cases are still being witnessed in the region.
In May this year, a six-year-old girl was reported defiled in Garissa, sparking concerns of rising cases of child molestation.
Incidentally, the media has been at the forefront in championing for the rights of children and also highlighting on their plights.
This has largely piled pressure on governmental and non-governmental organizations to focus on children issues in the region.
