On Tuesday, Mainye resigned both as chairman and board member of Nyamira Municipality Board, in a move that has caused anxiety within the establishment.

In an interview, he said: "I am a priest and I trust in God. I am not used to high voltage politics so I had to do most honorable thing, resigning."

Even before his resignation, a section of Nyamira residents demanded to know why the board members took oath a week ago in late hours of night, further raising eyebrows.

But a source who spoke in confidence said the Catholic priest was keen to detach himself from persistent politics that have sabotaged service delivery.

"Father never though this work is political. The governor was not even of the opinion that he takes over as chair. Further more, he's concerned that some residents think swearing-in of members was wrongly carried out late evening," he said.

The impeccable source further says Fr Mainye was troubled with continued exclusion of Municipality Manager Jackson Mogusu from meetings since the board was constituted a week ago.
