Among those attending are former NOCK president Kipchoge Keino, current President Paul Targat among other sporting personalities across the country. Senior government officials are also in attendance.

Athletics Kenya Nyanza South Peter Angwenyi on Thursday said the funeral will be an occasion for legends to make various demands to government over their plight.

"We are burying John Mayaka today and tomorrow it will be the turn for Nyantika Maiyoro. It's a double tragedy for the sport in Gusii. Sadly, it's worthy to note that they struggled all through.

"We shall use Friday's funeral as an avenue to communicate the legends plights. We cannot continue doing things same way and we expect different results."

Also expected at Kiogoro are Governors John Nyagarama (Nyamira) and James Ongwae of Kisii along with several local leaders from both Kisii and Nyamira.

Notably, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i, who cleared the hospital bill for the former Olympian, is also expected to make his way through the region.

Nyantika represented Kenya in the inaugural Indian Ocean games in 1953 and participated several games including Olympics in 1956 and 1960 editions.
