The Mulembe nation (The Luhya community) as per the headcount statistics is the second largest ethnic group in Kenya after Kikuyus.
However, it appears as the top tribe with disunity as far as ‘who is who’ is concerned regarding politics.
Every political leader in Mulembe nation always wants to be recognised as the head of the community and whenever a need arises should be consulted.
The kind of disorganisation has blurred the fate of Mulembe leaders when it comes to having a say in today’s heightened political arena, where you have to have one representative.
Well, on Saturday, 20 October 2018, Kakamega county got the privilege to host Kenya as a whole in an event christened ‘Mashujaa Day’ which means ‘Heroes Day’.
During the event, things went wrong when the protocol failed to give a chance to any of the Mulembe leaders to say a word apart from the host Hon. Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya, the current governor of Kakamega County.
According to the other leaders including former Kakamega Senator Khalwale, skipping the host leaders was a form of injustice, arguing that one of them would have been picked to talk on behalf of the Luhya nation.
A number of them who felt sidelined have blamed NASA leader Raila Odinga for failing to call his counterpart Musalia Mudavadi or Wetangula to address the massive crowd that gathered at Bukhungu stadium for the national holiday.
In the recent past, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli tried to unite the Mulembe nation in vain.
Now, unless Mulembe nation sits down and chooses one leader to represent them on the bargaining table, the sidelining might never come to pass.
