The other day, the Kalenjins obliterated the Standard Chartered marathon. If we had a gene that made us brag, we would tell everyone that has an ear and a functioning brain that it is our way of life; and the person saying this (including me) can’t even run for his or her life should the situation requires.

It is without a doubt that athletics is a lucrative venture. Yes, there are many wealthy athletes who have never seen the need to display their riches to everyone who wants to hear and see. In light of these, there are five things a champion athlete almost always has;

Four-wheel pick-up

Our athletes love the laid back village life. With poor roads, the only means of locomotion would definitely be a four-wheel drive vehicle that rules the roads regardless of the weather conditions. As such, you will never miss a four wheel single cabin Toyota pick-up truck packed in an athlete’s home.

Large tracts of land

After winning races from abroad, sometimes in obscure Eastern Europe countries, an athlete will troop back home and invest in land. For that reason, you will often hear about, that land belongs to that 'mkimbiaji'. Scattered all over Eldoret will be these lands, large tracts of them.

A tractor

Of what use will be large tracts of land without a tractor. Often a blue one, and four-wheeled at that, this is a must have for an athlete so that he can till his lands comfortably, without much hustle. These tractors (of what use is one tractor) has several implements such as a plough, harrowing tools, and planters. With these, farmer-cum-athlete breezes through wheat or maize planting season without a worry.

A permanent house

It is usually not that extravagant. It is a decent four or three bedroomed house that stands out in the neighbourhood. In that house, his wife and children will call home as he pursues his interests. The wife is usually a house-wife.

A Subaru

When the road is passable, it calls for a little speed and class. It is this moment that an athlete will call to action his Subaru, among other collections of cars he may have accumulated over time.
