Police officers in Voi town on Tuesday arrested four suspects involved in the illegal cooking gas business after a crackdown to end illegal filling of cooking gas.
The raid targeted an illegal liquefied petroleum gas plant along Mombasa-Nairobi Highway where over 1000 kilograms of cooking gas was seized and four suspects arrested.
Police suspected they have been smuggling cooking gas into the country through the porous borders from the neighbouring countries.
Moreover, the suspects are said to have set the refilling point along the highway as the main supply has been stealing from vehicles ferrying gases from Mombasa.
Joseph Chesire, the Voi Sub County Police Commander, confirmed that the four suspects will be probed for more detail as they target to arrest the main suspect, who is said to be the owner of the plant.
Chesire said the ongoing crackdown will continue until illegal and unlicensed filling plants are brought to book.
“The plants have been operating without licences and filling LPG cooking gas cylinders without following regulations. This is an ongoing crackdown on unlicensed filling plants along the highway,” he said as quoted by Nation.
The four suspects will be charged in court after the investigation.
