Not many Kenyans of Somali origin about her seemingly impossible feat.

Her name is Asli Hassan Abade, a Somali pilot, military figure and civil rights activist.

She broke the glass ceiling to become Africa's first female pilot, a feat that many thought impossible.

Ms Abade first took to the skies as a pilot in 1976, becoming Somalia's first and only female pilot, no mean feat in a massively patriarchal country.

It is in Italy and the United States where she had her flying training and returned back to her native Somalia to serve her country.

In an interview with Africa News, Abade attributed her success to the support that the then government accorded women.

She returned to Somalia last year, 2017, after being away for twenty-five years.

Doubtless, she an inspiration to young girls of Somali origin in Garissa and beyond.
